Jem,

Yes, this method will work with film where you
habitually leave the leader out when rewinding,
presumably because you intend to develop it yourself
(e.g. B&W). But in this case I had two cassettes, both
with film wound totally in, one exposed and the other
one not. I always carry one of those pens that write
on plastic in my camera bag.
