Gib,

I love the 280/2,8 too.

I had the opportunity to compare mine (2d version #11263)
with the Apo-Modul 280/2,8 (#11846) and will never, never
make the swap.

I often use mine (2.800gr) handheld which is impossible with
the Apo-Modul (3.700gr).

You can feel that the lens was designed for handheld use,
thanks to the handgrip delivered with the lens and to the
perfect balance.
The way the camera attachment ring rotate with locks ideally
placed give you the opportunity to change from horizontal to
vertical in less than a second and with no lock to screw or
unscrew like on all the following Leica tele lenses
(Apo-Modul, 280/4, 180/2, 70-180/2,8 etc..).

And with an Arca-Swiss ballhead + RRS mounting plate it work
great on a tripod too.
