Nathan,
The blight of town centres isn't a purely American phenomenon, we can see 
plenty of that locally. In fact Asda (you are correct in the Walmart 
association) is about to build a new supermarket not more than a mile away 
from our house, in a most residential area, which will once again suck the 
shoppers out of the towns. Such is progress?
Now if I was to record the building of the new supermarket with my Leica, 
at least it would stay on topic.

Hasn't WalMart recently acquired one of the UK retail chains (Asda or 
something like that)? If so, then
you can look forward to $2 pens but also deserted town centres as the local 
retailers are slowly killed
off by the new behemoth on the outskirts of the town. Visit any 
small-to-medium sized town in the U.S.
South and you will know what I am talking about.
