sean,

i had this problem last summer. i was in paris, shooting in botanical
garden in the rain when the led's started going out after just a second or
two. like you i was used to them staying on about 10 seconds, and didn't
know what the problem was; i was afraid i'd damaged the camera by shooting
in the rain. the next morning i called the maison du leica, described the
problem and was told that it was time to change the battery. i went in,
bought a new battery, put it in the camera, depressed the shutter release
... instead of staying on continuously, the lights were now blinking!
surprised, i said: 'hey, the led's are now blinking!!!' the owner, with a
disgruntled look on his face, responded: 'you've got the lens cap on!'
embarrassed, i took it off, and the led's worked as before.

haven't had a problem since.
