thanks for your thoughts. here are some follow-ups.

true, however the standard metal eyepiece that came with the M2 also has a
correction lens in it. i believe this is part of the viewfinder design of
leica M's, unlike the nikon eyepieces which are truly neutral for example.

unfortunately the rubber protector is pretty much stuck fast to its
eyepiece assembly. the rubber appears to be more of a plastic/rubber
synthetic so that probably explains it.
