These AF-30 flash units have the module for a specific camera built in and thus the flash is forever stuck in that particular camera's mode. The 40 MZ series use the SCA 300/3000 modules so you can switch them around to different camera makes. Just yesterday I ordered for $60 the module that will make my flash into an SF-20 emulator for my M6. I probably won't use it that much because the flash is bigger than the camera but .... if needed it will be there. I also noticed that these Metz AF-40 units eliminate the secondary flash head. I use mine in this mode quite a bit when bouncing the main light. It gives just enough direct light to the subject to fill in eye sockets that would be slightly dark in straight bounce mode. It is switchable off or on. The SCA 3501 module is available right now for the R8.
