Having four children and photographing three of the four births, I think
B&W is the way to go.

My second was born Dec 21 1972. Cameras were not allowed so I put my Minox
C, set on Automatic, loaded with Tri-x, set at ASA 800, in my pocket. When
Christopher was on his way out, I pulled the Minox out of my pocket, set
the distance, and started taking photographs. As I snapped away, I uttered
"you don't mind if I take some pictures, do you?", snap, snap, snap. The
doc and nurses were so busy they grunted "uh uh" as I snapped away.

I processed it in 1:100 Rodinal and have some great 5x7 prints of the birth.

Yes, a subminiature Minox is a camera too... :-)
