Kip,
        If the stage light is enough, why don't you use a small flood light?
Position it far back enough to just barely fill in the eye sockets. The
continous light is far less distracting than a flash. Especially, if you set
it up before hand.
        If your unsure of yourself with flash, this way you can see the
effect of the light.
