The first is a general overall method which will measure and give you an average exposure for about 80% of what you see in the viewfinder. If you want more precise exposure on a small area (about a 17 degree angle), then switch the meter to the small white dot. This will be approximately the size of the focusing dot in the center of the viewfinder, as you suspected. You should attempt to get an original Leica R3 instruction booklet that appear on eBay occasionally. Hope this helps. Chuck
