An E39 filter has a thread of M39 x 0.5 while the 40mm Summicron-C has a thread of M39 x 0.75. Other people have commented that series 5 filters fit in Leica's series 5.5 holder. I believe that the rubber hood functions as a filter holder on the 40mm Summicron-C.
