Ted,
    Instead of scaring people with your pirate look, while reloading, why
don't you do what Bill Allard does?
    Bill, has a small wire attached from the base plate of his M6 to the
camera to the eyelet.
    This way, he can let the base plate dangle and doesn't lose it while
reloading.
