Still photographers don't get paid for equipment but own the creative property. And is this fair. 2. Motion picture photographers get paid for equipment. I spent over 20 years as a motion picture cameraman (IATSE Local 644) and almost 20 years in still photography (WHNPPA, ASMP, ASPP). In all cases, in the motion picture business, every peice of equipment, camera, lenes, meter, filter, grip and lighting all are paid for in each project and if the photographer owns it he receives the money. In the USA the rights to the creative property(the photography) belongs to the production company as work for hire, under the copyright statue and can be transfered by written agreement. As a still photographer the creative product ( the photography)belongs to the photographer and can only be transfered by written agreement. Therefore the usage is granted by the owner of the property and money collected for first usage or any later uses is the photograhpers. Equipment is seldom rented and paid for by a client. There are a number of professional photography list that discuss this stuff all the time...I thought the reason for this list was to complain about what Leica hasn't done for us lately or how great the finish is on the camera found in a safety deposit box after thirty years was or maybe how best to use our equipment to produce images that compliment this great equipment. Please back to booze, pens, autos and cameras. Happy snaps, Steven Alexander
