Actually, they did do just that, but you may have missed it: it was outside of the exhibition proper. They had prints by everyone from Atget to Arbus, explaining the relation to Evans' work. It's true, a massive show of tiny prints is a difficult business. But there's no way around it, if you want an historically rigorous and complete account. I wouldn't go to this show unless you're in the mood to concentrate fiercely. (Again, I found it deeply affecting.) Douglas Cooper
