I begin to advance the film before replacing the bottom plate -- I can see whether it has caught, or not. Practice -- your mind is clear on the concept, but are your hands? Sacrifice one roll of film to the god of practice. You won't need to rewind the film all the way back into its cannister, so you can open the camera while rewinding, and stop before it slips into the cassette.
