As I recall it was to keep us focussed on getting out and making pictures instead of getting involved in flame wars, as well as for sharpening our photo skills. I liked the idea, and having been given a large stock of frozen, outdated film made the goal more realistic! BTW the film had been frozen a month before expiration, and had been kept frozen for 10 years before my boss decided to clean our his freezer. All of this film (chromes and color neg) has been fine.
