IMHO the main advantage of an SLR is not so much in zooming
(although that can be handy) but rather its suitability for macro and
long telephoto. Why not keep the M and enter the fascinating world
of Leica rangefinder photography? Read up on the subject and
discover it's unique advantages. It may require a bit of patience,
dedication, and effort at first, but the results will be worth it.
