Because until the F5 came along their autofocus sucked! They were a 
laughing stock with photojournalists. Arguably a group that needs fast AF 
more than anybody but maybe sports specialists. So they would know. 
Photographers with the money made the switch, because photographers tend to 
go with the latest technology that will give them an edge. Canon's weakness 
now is their lenses fall apart much faster than Nikon lenses. At least 
that's the complaints I'm hearing from the Canon users I know. Not counting 
their L series of course, but the L series is still a limited selection of 
lenses compared to Nikon's overall selection. How would Leica fare if they 
go to less well-built lenses that fall apart quickly? Down the tubes faster 
than you can say blitzlichtpulver.

And the new F100 has faster AF than the F5 too. But wait, they'll speed up 
the F5's AF any time now.
