In general, true enough. However, Bass Ale ("malt does more than Milton
can/To justify God's ways to man" and all of that) was first concocted in
the late 18th century precisely to travel well: it was intended on slaking
the thirsts of arid Brits in India, back in the pre-Suez days of 90-day
passages and more from the Mother Country. And it DOES travel well.

Bass is the only beer to have achieved sufficient historical impact to have
been afforded an entry both in the EB and the OED.
