Pre WWW club competitions were the easiest - perhaps the only - way of showing images to an audience wider than family and friends for many people. Now we have the web, and everyone's a publisher *and* a critic. Sturgeon's law still applies, of course, but it's nice to think that as more and more 'non computerists' get on the 'net and the web, there will be some really exciting discoveries.
