It has a photographic niche, just as the Leica M does. The 28-70 F2.8 AFS (I owned one) is a monster and is one of the worst lenses that I have ever owned. One must be very selective with Nikon lenses. I am not alone in my assessment of this lense. It is a frequent discussion on the Nikon list. Nikon cameras, in my opinion, are wonderful photographic tools when speed is needed. When high quality optics are needed there are very few options except Leitz, Schneider and Zeiss and a very select few Nikon lenses.
