A digital representation is a symbolic representation of information. An analog
representation is a representation that uses a physical model of the information
to be represented.

Writing is digital because it is symbolic. The word "tree" is not a physical
model of a tree; it's just a symbol that stands for a tree. Film photography is
analog because it is a physical model of the image being recorded; the film
emulsion contains a model, in the form of more-or-less dense areas of silver or
dye, of the light distribution in the original image.
