Uh... no, that's not a common practice at all.  It is much more common to set
the Reply-To address to send replies back to the list rather than back to the
original poster.  If this isn't done, the reply address must be modified for
every single reply to the list, which is very impractical.

If you wish to reply personally and privately to someone on a mailing list, you
_must_ check the reply address and modify it as necessary in your reply.  You
should always assume that a normal reply to a mailing list will go to the entire
list, because nine out of ten mailing lists are configured in exactly that way.
