I think most such discussions are like arguing about how many angels can dance
on the head of a pin, anyway.  If the experts say that a Noctilux is not quite
at its best when wide open compared to when it is stopped down a bit, I guess I
can take their word for it, but I seriously doubt that I'd notice it in my work.
In order to see differences like this, you have to have an entire workflow that
is up to the same standards--if any part of the chain is below those standards,
the differences in the other parts of the chain won't matter.
