Had that problem also with a Zeiss Planar lens. Careful inspection with a loupe
showed that the white paint had not come off, but was covered with other stuff.
I cleaned the numbers using a wooden toothpick, a very tiny amount of toothpaste
and a small toothbrush. Result is perfect.
