You can use the scale focus function when it would otherwise be difficult to lock the focus and exposure at the same time. For instance, say you want to focus on a subject which is backlit. You can set the focus distance, meter for the shadows and lock the exposure by pressing the shutter release half way, than reframe the picture and press the shutter release the rest of the way. Another time when the scale focus can be very useful is if you have a subject which the AF has difficulty locking in, such as in low light or mist. Close up work is often difficult for the AF to target accurately as well. Set the focus distance and take the picture. >If I want to uprate XP2 (asa 400 film) on my minilux too asa800, do I set >the exp compensation dial to -2 stops ? Is this the only way to override the >auto DX facility ? There are two ways to adjust the ASA setting on cameras which use the DX codings only to set it: - - As you suggest, use the EV compensation control if so equipped. 1 EV is a doubling or a halfing of film speed, so if you want to expose ASA 400 film at ASA 800, set the EV compensation to -1. - - Buy a DX coding kit from a good photographic supplier (most good shops carry them but you can order them from Porters Camera via the web, <http://www.porters.com/>.
