David,

The 40 MZ3i is the 'improved' version, it has E-TTL for the latest Canon
EOS models, namely the EOS 50E (aka Elan IIe) and EOS 3.  The previous
40 MZ3 only had A-TTL (for older Canon models such as the EOS 5QD and
1n) but not E-TTL.
