The following from the current online issue of the
British Journal of Photography. I think many of you
will find it interesting.

Hand x-rays 'are safe'

Ahead of the official announcement at the end of
August BJP
has learnt the
outcome of the British Photographic Liaison Committee
(BPLC) airport x-ray
trials (BJP 3 Feb, 1999), held in conjunction with
Kodak,
Fuji, Agfa and
Ilford.

The aim was to determine what extent, if any, airport
hand
baggage x-ray
machines cause damage to photographic film. The
results
will show that both
APS and medium format films do behave differently to
35mm,
but the
differences only show up if the films are 'very
heavily'
scanned. Under
normal conditions (up to eight passes through the
x-ray
machine) none of
the films showed any detectable effect.

Over 400 rolls of film were tested in speed ratings
from
100 to 3200, in
both b&w and colour, together with digital storage
media.
The digital media
showed no effect of the x-ray scanning. Under no
circumstances should you
put photographic film in an aircraft's hold. In
addition,
providing the
film is not scanned more than eight times it will be
completely unaffected
by hand-baggage x-ray inspection and photographers do
not
need to ask for a
hand inspection.
