Dan,

Yes, it would seem that you are (or, at least, your lens is) "missing
something." On my latest-pre-ASPH 35mm Summicron, there are two notches on
the front of the lens, one at the top and one at the bottom, into which the
two stubby prongs on the 12524 lens shade fit, and which thereby keep that
shade from unwanted rotation. (I believe the ASPH 35mm Summicron and its
new shade have the notches and prongs too, but as I mentioned, I have no
actual experience to support that.)

Perhaps your Summicron is an earlier model without the notches, but I'm no
authority on these lenses and don't really know that for sure either.
Presumably you could mount one of the rectangular shades on a lens without
notches by filing off the prongs, but then, as you said, there would be
nothing to keep the shade from rotating, and repeatedly having to adjust its
orientation may be more trouble than it's worth.

Personally, I like the circular shade just as much, not only because its
cut-outs aid viewing, but because it also fits my 50mm Summicron, thereby
allowing me to carry just one shade for the two lenses. But there are
pluses and minuses to all these things, and since I like to use lens caps,
either a built-in retractable shade or a collapsable rubber shade is most
convenient for me (and if the 40mm Summicron-C can have one, why not the
35mm Summicron?).

Best of luck in your search!

Art Peterson

I have been looking at my ol' 35 summicron and cannot find the groove or
catch to prevent a retangular hood from rotating around and cause
vignetting. Am I missing something?
