Interesting.  What is the serial number of your M4?  Mine is 1251xxx (1970).  
I wonder if they deleted the lug sometime during M4 production.  

BTW, the problem with not having the lug isn't so much the snugness (and it's 
the same problem with all the aftermarket plates) it's the leverage applied 
to the baseplate/tripod threads if the camera gets accidentally lifted 
upwards while attached to the tripod.
