I'm using one of these as a portrait lens.  Excellent performance. Sharp, Leica grade color rendition. Great bokeh...  Not as sharp as the 100 f2.8 as you'd expect, but you don't need that sharpness for people.  Whenever I use it, I never get the feeling that "I should have used the 100". I don't know about its flare suppression characteristics - never challenged it, and I always use the builtin hood.
