I used to shoot chromes of 4th of July fireworks every year. Try using a
fast film -- EI 200-400. Lock the shutter open and cover the lens with a
hat, towel, lens cap between bursts if you do not want the foreground to
lighten up and the sky to get lighter. Let a few bursts go for each picture
- -- you can make everything look like the grand finale by letting multiple
bursts go on the same frame. F stop choice is not so critical but changes
the look. Basically, wider F stops give broader, brighter, less saturated
lines of color, while smaller F stops will give you finer, darker, more
saturated lines, which is a matter of personal preference. Experiment.
