Unless she really can not live with match needle metering I would suggest a 
Leicaflex SL.  You can get these for 350-500 including a Summicron 50.  They 
are built like tanks and take the best slr lenses in the world.  Also, you 
don't need to spend a fortune on extra lenses.  There are several lenses 
that the world has seemed to forget including the 35 f2.8, the 50 Summicron 
and the 135 f2.8.  All can be found in excellent condition for less  than 
300.00!  PLUS, in an assault she can use the Leicaflex as a weapon and still 
be able to take of picture of the assailants body once the dust has settled!

If the metering IS an issue you could go with a Contax slr.  There are 
plenty on the market, and they are very well made and Zeiss lenses are 
really great.  (Much better than the vast majority of Nikon or Canon stuff.
