Good sturdy body with solid feel, manual film advance preferred(that's MY >girl!) --> difficult to beat the black body Nikon FM2 if you want a real camera on a tight budget. Lens wise: the 60mm micro-nikkor ? The 105 f/2.5 is mandatory "my next birthday". Or a 28mm, 35mm well chosen wide angle as "basic". Or the ubiquitous Zoom-Nikkor, the more interesting one being the 35-105mm, but over budget, or the 28-70mm "classic" "baby zoom". Tamron makes a good alternate lens choice, too. This could satisfy her for quite some time as long as you keep quiet about your Leica lenses ... I also love the leather case: not fashionable but this one just makes the camera safer and more comfortable to use, detaching the front part and keeping the "camera glove" just for that: the feel. Wide shoulder strap : mandatory. --> How about a used Contax G1 with a Carl Zeiss 35mm W.A.? That could also be an excellent relatively-low-budget alternate if SLR is not an absolute must ?
