Speed Racer-
If you are looking for a 35- and you are going to hit the slopes, then a
'fast' lens probably would not be a high priority. I have a Summaron, LTM
actually, and was quite pleased with the performance. It can be used with
the M adapter ring- which I did until I got the 35 Summicron.
Some people will say it is not the sharpest, or not the fastest, or some
other 'reason' not to get it- which makes them not as expensive as the
demand is not so great!! Your good fortune! It is Leitz glass, does a really
decent job if you're not making stuff larger than 8x10, and really very
compact and light! On the slopes, with plenty of light, and the lens stopped
to 5.6 or 8, it will serve you well, and you'll have saved enough money to
start saving fo a 90 Elmarit!
Your choice of the M2 is right on- I have looked at the M4-P; nice camera,
but really pricey! A good user M2 that you won't be ashamed to be seen with,
and at the same time not so dear that you're afraid to use it, can be had
for 800-1000 USD depending on condition.... I found an M3 that needed a new
advance head- for $450, and Sherry fixed it and I had onl;y about $700 in it
total, when she restored it to like new condition! So, if you can wait a
couple of weeks for a good CLA, look for a 'fixer-upper'- you can save some
major ducats that way!
Welcome to the Wonderful World of Leica Nuts!
