I tried the Elmar, but the focus lock prevented me from using it on my friend's enlarger ( my darkroom is 'under construction....') and I just got the Focotar, and have been too busy to try it on his enlarger.. I have restored a Valoy enlarger, but haven't tried it with either lens yet. The Elmar should perform decently stopped down- probably not a well as the Focotar, as it was specifically designed for enlarging. It has a symmetrical design- the rear group is like the front group ( a tessar type?) and so should perform decently at enlarging distanced- it must've been used a lot since they made the VALOO shade that makes setting the aperture on the Elmar a little easier when it is mounted on an enlarger. Interestingly enough, Leitz recommended using the Summicron for LARGE enlargements- I would assume this meant really big prints where one has to turn the head around and project the negative image on the floor. Whether it is because of the wide aperture that would make focusing easier, or if the lens' field becomes 'flat' enough at that lens to paper distance I am not sure.
