I am a believer in the mirror lock up feature when using slower speeds and
a tripod of course.  I was shooting some ducks in the spring and found that
with the 400mm + 2x, the shots were much sharper than when I had not used
the MLU in the past.  I was using the R8 rather than an R6 or R7 that I
would use last year.  With the R8, you turn on the MLU switch and then the
first press of the cable release puts the mirror up, and the second fires
the shutter.  I did however, find that I had a few shots of the duck with
its eyes closed.  In the furture, I would bring a small pair of binnoculars
and look at the subject through them and fire the shutter when everything
is right.  A couple pictures taken at sunset and at slow shutter speeds of
1/15 or lower with 800mm are below.
