The IS technology lessens the effect of camera shake, allowing handheld 
shooting at slower shutter speeds.  To stop subject motion, you still need a 
faster shutter speed and therefore a wider aperture; also, a wider aperture 
is necessary to get the shallow DOF needed to blur the background for subject 
isolation, particularly with shorter lenses.
