Hi Buzz,

The markings are also on the underside for when you're taking pictures over 
your head ;-)  I believe they are on top and bottom because you could 
dismount the lens head to use on a Viso with short mounts or a series of 
extension tubes.  When screwing the lens on one of these adapters, the 
aperture settings might not line up correctly for the user.
