I may well get this wrong....but...I believe the original Luddites were
cotton or woolen mill workers - early 19th century? Belgium or Holland? -
who smashed "automated" mill equipment that would eliminate some of their
jobs...Correctly used it does not imply opposition to technology, but
rather to automation....hmmmmmmm..
