It is from today's online issue of the British Journal of Photography. New image search engine causes furore A new image-based search engine is causing controversy as it collects millions of images from the Internet and displays them on its own site, writes Julian Jackson. Despite the good intentions of the software, matters have now come to a head with Californian photographer and publisher Leslie Kelly alleging that images from his books are on the Arriba Vista image search site as thumbnails with all the copyright information removed and advertising banners displayed without any relevant permission being granted. Visitors to the site (http://www.arribavista.com) will find a copyright disclaimer on another page, explaining that Arriba Vista does not own the copyright on the approximately five million images it has "vacuumed up" using the WebVac feature on its image management system Arriba Ex-press. The Arriba Vista search engine is to photographs what Yahoo! is to web pages, with its income derived from banner advertising. Arriba Vista claims that it is providing a useful service helping people find images on the web. A search at the Arriba site delivers a series of thumbnails held on arriba vista's server, which, when clicked on, send the visitor to the original website. _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!?
