I own both and I prefer the later in the field:
the 1974-89 four elements Tele-Elmarit.
Mine was made in Germany in 1987.

It's a better lens IMO and weighs less than the five elements.
(but the chrome version of it (1964-66) looks so nice on a M3)  
;-)

Clearly, the new Elmarit (1990) is the best but not as convenient.

By the way, the Elmar-C/4 made for the CL is also a excellent
lens, maybe better than the T-E, but slower.
And it have to match the cam of your camera.
