I think the reason half the people don't have any problems at all with the "official" way of loading and the other half just can't seem to use it with success (including me, before I realized it), is that the unsuccessful half does the first wind as fast as they would normally wind. Before I realized this "slow wind" technique, I had followed a lugger's advice to remove the spring inside the take-up spool. This worked very well for me, and I might still us it this way since I want to wind before I put back the bottom plate, but I've tried putting back the spring and doing the slow first wind several times since and it's not failed me.
