Joe,Bob, Thib:
Osterloh in his Leica M book compares the M5 and M6 metering systems.
Accordingly,and here I copy his Table from p. 41:
M6
M5
Diameter of measuring spot 12mm 8.5mm
Measuring range(cd/m^2) 0.25-32000 0.06-32000
Exposure values
1--18 -1--18
Clearly, the CdS meter of the M5 is more sensitive than that of the M6. In
addition, the M5 meter qualifies as a semi-spot meter. Moreover, the shutter
speed can be read on an analog scale in the finder.
The problem with the M5 is the 140grams of extra weight(M6--560gm,
M5--700gm) and larger size(M6--138x77mm, M5--155x84mm). Although, I haven't
heard any complaints about the unusual shape and weight of the R8 compared
to the previous R's(R4 through R7). Summing up, I concur that the M5 is the
finest M body from the wizards of Wetzlar.
