Subject: [Leica] R8 focusing

I don't think it is really fair to compare the focusing screen of an Eos1n
with the 70~200 f2.8 with that of the slower Leica 80-200 vario elmlar at
f4. There are some good reasons why:

1. The Canon focusing screen is probably optimized to work better with the
AF sensors than the using the lens manually. This may not deliver
equivalent focus accuracy which the Leica R8 would no doubt have.
2. The whole f stop slower of a vario elmar would account for a good deal
of screen brightness.
3. If the Leica had a plain matt screen, it perhaps would have been a
fairer comparison, but more than likely it had a split image and microprism
style screen in.
4. To be really fair a test would have simular speed lenses on repective
cameras on tripods focusing on test targets.....and in real photo situations
on the street. The canon user would be forced in this situation to slide
the autofocus switch to M.
