David, do I understand this correctly: You want to get in very close to
subjects up to 20 feet away? If so, a 100-200 mm macro lens might be very
nice, if you can find one at a very good price. A close-focusing normal
telephoto might also be good. If you're going after birds, an alternative
might be to place the camera near a promising spot, and fire it remotely.
Nikon's a pretty good bet, as you have the option to go with older gear, and
if you choose to update the system, your money hasn't been wasted on lenses
which no longer fit. The FE and FM-series is nice (a clean one might be
pushing your budget when you add the lens) and the econo-minded FM10 is
pretty darned nice for the money--even comes with a small zoom lens;
probably not in the class of the Micro-Nikkors, but those may not quite fit
your budget right now. Why these cameras? They don't impose too many
limitations upon your technique, they use readily available batteries, and
they have depth of field preview levers and most lenses have DOF scales on
'em--very useful when working at close range, and all too often missing at
this price range.

Regarding audio, I do think that "High End" is an unfortunate term, as the
tendancy is to equate price with quality of results. I think "Deep End"
would be much better, as it brings some of the sense of a passion towards
doing things really well into the picture. Whether you have a Leica, Minolta
or whatever, I think the latter is essential when it comes to getting
results!
