You try shooting with a 28mm f/5.6 lens with 100 speed film in a room with little light. That was then, this is now. And Gene Smith was the one who said "I use available light, whatever is available." Stage lighting, flash, bulbs, 12 hour printing sessions on one print, then make a copy negative for further prints... he's done it all.
