Marc,
Your story (about the Yard sale) is nice, it shows that your actions can be
rewarded.

I heard yesterday an even stranger story of some unearthed Leica gear.
A fellow turned up in a camera shop with nearly a dozen M1s, MDs and similar
cameras and asked if they were interested in buying them. 'Yes, we would
be', replied the shop, which please the chap greatly as he had discovered
them in a skip outside of Manchester University disposed of by a scientific
department!

Sadly, here at the BBC where I work I learnt that a Hard Bed 20"x24" dry
mounting press had also been consigned to the rubbish! Worth a few pounds to
the right people, even scrap metal merchants!
