From what I've come to understand, Leicas (and eventually other, small, 35mm cameras) allowed people greater freedom of movement, less intrusion and vastly enhanced exposure to potential photographing situations. This is, in my mind, without doubt the great benefit and advantage of Leica rangefinders today: when auto- everything cameras are growing to suitcase sizes, the Leica is still the same, small, quiet, neat and elegant package it was originally.
