You raise some good points here. English is a particular challenge in an
international environment like the LUG because it is spoken in so many places
with its own particular expressions and nuances. When I moved to Belgium in '95,
I found that everyone at my company spoke excellent English (it is our working
language). But I also quickly learned to avoid using American expressions which
most Europeans and indeed many people in the UK would not understand. For
example, "batting 1000", "Monday morning quarterback", etc. Conversely, there
are British expressions which will confuse many Americans; e.g. I am now going
to have a fag, and the time is almost half seven...
