To check the proper synch setting try the following------------
Remove the lens, slip a plastic business card into the film channel,
trip the shutter,using  a mirror to reflect the image of the film
frame and adjust the synch setting to fill the full frame.

Reducing the flash intensity with facial tissue as required.
